To amend the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 to simplify the claim process for beneficiaries of public safety officers who die from a heart attack or stroke to receive payment through the Public Safety Office Benefit program.
Section 1. Short title
This Act may be cited as the Public Safety Officers’ Benefits Enhancement Act of 2026
.
Sec. 2. Simplified claims
Section 1201(k) of title I of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 (34 U.S.C. 10281(k)) is amended—
(1)
in the matter following paragraph (3), by striking or was directly and proximately caused by something other than the mere presence of cardiovascular-disease risk factors

(2)
by striking paragraph (3);
(3)
in paragraph (2)(C)—
(A)
by striking 24 hours
and inserting 72 hours
; and
(B)
by striking ; and
at the end and inserting ,
; and
(4)
in paragraph (1)(B), by striking the semicolon at the end and inserting ; and

Sec. 3. Application
The amendments made by this Act shall apply in the case of any claim for benefits that is pending or filed on or after the date of enactment of this Act.
